Step by step

How you get paid

  1. Your story is published

    In print or online, with your name or your photo. It can be the whole story, or a bigger article that quotes you by name or uses your photo.

  2. We tell you the same day we see it

    We send you the link the way you asked us to contact you, and ask where you would like the money to go. If you spot it first, send us the link.

  3. You reply with your bank details

    The name on the account needs to match yours.

  4. We pay you £100

    By bank transfer, within 24 hours of your story being published. If we only find out about it later, or your details reach us later, we pay within 24 hours of that.

What counts as published

Your story counts as published when it, or any part of it, appears in print or online and names you or shows your photo. That includes a bigger article that quotes you by name or uses your photo, a story another publication picks up, one that runs months later, and one that runs after you asked us to withdraw it. If it runs in more than one place, that is still one story and one payment of £100.

“Your photo” means any photo you send us, whether or not you are in it.

We pay nothing for a story that runs without your name or your photo, or for one you placed yourself.

We look out for your story and message you when we see it. If you spot it first, send us the link. You have 6 months from when your story is first published to claim your payment.

If a journalist talks to you but the story never runs, there is no payment, and there is nothing for you to pay either.

Staying safe

  • We only ever email you from an address ending @sendmystory.co.uk, and we only message or call you if you chose WhatsApp or a phone call.
  • We will only ever ask for the details needed to send money to you: the name on the account, the sort code and the account number.
  • We will never ask for a card number, a PIN, a password, a security code or a fee of any kind.
  • If anything feels wrong, stop and email us at stories@sendmystory.co.uk.

Tax

We pay the full £100 and do not take any tax off. Whether you need to tell HMRC about it depends on your own situation, and HMRC’s guidance on gov.uk explains when extra income needs to be declared.

Why £100, when other sites talk about thousands?

Big sums are paid for a handful of exclusive stories each year, and most people who send a story in never see them. We would rather make you a clear promise we keep every time: if your story runs with your name or your photo, you get £100, quickly, with no small print about what the paper decided to pay.
